Delays or Closures

The Superintendent is empowered to close the schools, dismiss them early or delay the start in the event of hazardous weather or other emergencies which threaten the safety, health or welfare of students or staff members. It is understood that he/she will take such action only after consultation with appropriate authorities and personnel.
 
Parents, students and staff members shall be informed early in each school year as to how they shall be notified in event of emergency closings or early dismissals.

When the Superintendent has closed schools or delayed the start of school, all buildings will be closed and all staff members will not be required to report to work unless otherwise requested by his/her supervisor.

Winter Weather Procedures

SSD puts student and staff safety first.

As we often see in the high country, weather can be unpredictable and can vary from one end of Summit County to the other. Families should always make the best safety decision for their children. If the weather does not appear to be safe for travel, parents should exercise the right to keep their children at home.
 
HOW ARE DECISIONS MADE?
● Safety is our priority in determining cancelations and delays.
● District Administration consults a number of District, County and State departments to assess current
and future weather and road conditions.

WHEN WILL A DECISION BE MADE?
Communication will be sent by 6 am.
2 hour delay. If road conditions are poor, but weather predictions indicate quick improvements, we will
initiate a two-hour delay.
Transportation. In the event of a two-hour delay, buses will run exactly two hours later than
normal.
Pre-School. Half-day morning preschool programs will be canceled if there is a two-hour delay.
Cancelation: If weather and road conditions are not expected to improve and deteriorate, the District
will cancel school.
○ If there is inclement weather during the school day, the District strives to make a decision and
communicate any cancellations of after school activities or events prior to 1:00 p.m.
● If there are no reports of a delayed start or cancellation, all schools are operating according to their
normal schedules.

HOW WILL FAMILIES BE NOTIFIED?
● The District will send out an email and text to all families and staff. If you are not signed up to receive
district communications, please login to PowerSchool and update your preferences.
● Updates will be on The District website (www.summitk12.org) and sent to local media outlets.
● The District’s transportation information hotline 970-368-1777 will have the latest information.
