Welcome to Summit Middle School!
I am excited to welcome our SMS Tigers to the 2019-2020 school year.
We have so many great things planned for this year!
I am now in my third year as the Principal here at Summit Middle School. I am very grateful for all of my past experiences and the mentors I have had along the way. I hope to help students learn the importance of their experiences and those people around them that support them to be their best.
My first role as a school administrator was as Head of School for Academy for Global Exploration. AGE was a small accredited high school focusing on international cultural experiences and outdoor adventure. Over five years I led 11 semesters taking students to places like South Africa, Japan, Greece, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Along with amazing cultural experiences, we were skiing, climbing, kayaking and surfing around the world! This time cemented my passion for experiential and real world learning experiences. Students thrived when immersed in their learning and had real collaborators and audiences for their work.
After that, I moved to Nederland, Colorado and joined a private middle and high school in Boulder. Watershed School sought to balance rigorous academics and social emotional learning in a project based environment. I learned much about middle school and high school curriculum development and how to look at the entire scope of what students need to be successful in this world.
For four years, I was the Asst. Principal at Nederland Middle/Senior High School. I was anxious to get back into a public school and wanted to work in the community where I lived. I enjoyed the immersion into the community and served on many town and community boards. I strongly believe that schools and their communities must be woven together. Our students need to be involved outside of the school house and feel a connection to where they live. We have so many local resources that can make the educational experience so much richer for students. While at NMSHS I got back into coaching and coached the mountain bike team and helped with the alpine ski program.
My wife, Leigh, and I are so happy to be a part of the Summit County community. Leigh is also in education and teaches at the elementary level. Our son Aldo is a future Tiger, he just turned 2! We love to be outside biking, skiing and enjoying the mountains of Colorado.
