Welcome to Summit Middle School!

I could not be more excited to join the SMS Tiger family as your new Principal!  I grew up in southern Oregon and I earned my undergraduate degree and Master's in Education from the University of Oregon.  Go Ducks!  I began my professional career as a social studies teacher and taught many years at the middle and high school level.  My favorite classes to teach were Geography and Explorers, a class about Lewis and Clark, Earnest Shackleton and other famous explorer/leaders in history.

My first role as a school administrator was as Head of School for Academy for Global Exploration.  AGE was a small accredited high school focusing on international cultural experiences and outdoor adventure.  Over five years I led 11 semesters taking students to places like South Africa, Japan, Greece, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.  Along with amazing cultural experiences, we were skiing, climbing, kayaking and surfing around the world!  This time cemented my passion for experiential and real world learning experiences.  Students thrived when immersed in their learning and had real collaborators and audiences for their work.

After that, I moved to Nederland, Colorado and joined a private middle and high school in Boulder.  Watershed School sought to balance rigorous academics and social emotional learning in a project based environment.  I learned much about middle school and high school curriculum development and how to look at the entire scope of what students need to be successful in this world.

For the past four years, I was the  Asst. Principal at Nederland Middle/Senior High School.  I was anxious to get back into a public school and wanted to work in the community where I lived.  I enjoyed the immersion into the community and served on many town and community boards.  I strongly believe that schools and their communities must be woven together.  Our students need to be involved outside of the school house and feel a connection to where they live.  We have so many local resources that can make the educational experience so much richer for students.  While at NMSHS I got back into coaching and coached the mountain bike team and helped with the alpine ski program.

I am very grateful for all of my past experiences and the mentors I have had along the way.  I hope to help students learn the importance of their experiences and those people around them that support them to be their best.

My wife, Leigh, and I are new to living in Summit County and are so happy to be a part of the community here. Leigh is also in education and teaches at the elementary level.  She is taking this year away from the classroom to be with our new son, Aldo!  Aldo is a future Tiger, but is just three weeks old as I write this.  We love to be outside biking, skiing and enjoying the mountains of Colorado.
